With this in mind, we often receive a lot of questions from customers or read a lot of queries online regarding compression products that we thought would be useful to share on this blog, to help enlighten those individuals who may require additional information regarding the world of compression and the huge benefits to peoples general health and well-being. These questions are listed below;
How many hours a day should you wear compression stockings?
We would suggest that you put them on first thing in the morning, as this then protects the legs as soon as you get up and start to walk around. Continue to wear them throughout the day and take them off before going to bed or when you are able to put your feet up.
When should you not wear compression stockings?
Compression stockings are typically fine to wear for most people, however, we would always recommend checking with your Doctor, Midwife or a Health Professional before purchasing graduated compression hosiery, as there are contraindications with its use. Those who have Arterial Disease, Peripheral Vascular Disease, Diabetes, Deep Vein Thrombosis or those who have suffered any of these in the past should seek medical advice first.
Can wearing compression socks be harmful?
Graduated Compression is designed to effectively aid the blood circulation in the legs and offers relieving therapy for many venous disorders and symptoms, so are not inherently harmful. However, wearing ill-fitting compression socks can hinder the effectiveness of them and can potentially be harmful for some. For example if the incorrect size has been purchased and the leg measurements are too big for the socks, then there may be a ‘restrictive’ action, rather than a ‘boosting’ action, so it is important to speak to the compression hosiery providers about sizing prior to purchasing.
Why do you have to wear compression stockings?
There are an extensive range of reasons as to why individuals wear compression stockings. For example, athletes will wear them during sporting events to help maximise blood flow velocity and oxygenation to the muscles, expectant mums may wear them to help relieve varicose veins or customers may purchase them to prevent or reduce serious medical conditions, such as swelling, thrombosis, ulcerations, phlebitis, POTS, venous stasis and so on.
Indeed, compression stockings are specifically designed in such a manner that they apply a gentle pressure to your legs, where the squeeze is most at the ankle and gradually gets less and less up the leg. This graduated compression helps push blood back into the deep veins and improves the blood flow being carried back to the Heart, helping to mitigate any discomfort that you may experience as a consequence of stagnated blood circulation. It can also help reduce the onset of deep vein thrombosis and other circulation problems, if worn correctly of course.
Can compression socks be worn all day?
As our title stipulates - compression socks CAN and are designed to be worn ALL DAY LONG.
Although, having a variety of compression socks can be beneficial to maximise comfort or style for a range of customers. If you are someone that needs to wear compression socks on a daily basis, then you may want to spice up your hosiery draw with different designs and colours, such as toeless compression socks, sheer support stockings, opaque support tights and so forth.
How long does it take for compression stockings to reduce swelling?
Compression stockings are designed with the aim of reducing swelling. How long it takes to reduce this swelling will differ from person-to-person, but generally, as soon as they are put on, you get a feeling of containment and a lighter sensation in the legs. It may take as little as half an hour or it may take up to several days, either way, you should soon see a noticeable reduction in swelling and enjoy having healthier, more comfortable legs.
What happens if I don’t wear compression stockings?
We can’t make you buy or wear any compression products, but the pain and discomfort you may experience by not wearing the likes of compression stockings, can be prolific. Our aim is to help eliminate or decrease any pain or discomfort you may be enduring and to help diminish and improve the appearance of swelling and varicose veins, allowing you to freely walk around with less or no pain at all.
Do compression socks really work?
Yes they do! Scientific studies have found a clear correlation between compression socks and improving blood circulation in the legs. Doctors have been recommending compression hosiery for years, you may even remember them as ‘granny stockings’ in days of old, but today, compression hosiery has come a long way, so NO MORE ‘Nora Batty’!
